In Shakespe bes Othello, the two main male characters are Othello and Iago. Othello is a moor, or a man of color, however he is also a general in the army of Venice. He is a powerful and respected man who falls in neck and marries a white woman. Iago is Othellos ensign and was passed over for a promotion by Othello. He is a manipulative and destructive man who spends the entire play seeking penalize on Othello because he was passed over for promotion.
In the beginning of the play, in the Second Act, it is easy to see the gentle nature of Othello and the love he and his wife, Desdemona share. Othello tells Desdemona:
It gives me wonder great as my study
To see you present before me. O my souls joy,
If after either tempest come such calms,
May the winds blow public treasury they have wakened death,
And let the labouring barque climb hills of seas
Olympus-high, and bury again as low
As hells from heaven. If it were right off to die
Twere now to be most happy, for I fear
My soul hath her content so absolute
That not another comfort like to this
Succeeds in unknown fate. (2.1.180-189)
To which Desdemona responds:
The heavens forbid
barely that our loves and comforts should increase
Even as our days do grow.
(2.1.190-192)
And Othello replies:
I cannot speak enough of this content
It wampum me here, it is too much of joy.
And this, (they kiss) and this, the greatest discords be
That eer our black Maria shall make. (2.1.193-196)
Even in the Third Act, their love is still homely when Othello calls out to Desdemona:
Excellent wretch! Perdition catch my soul
But I do love thee, and when I love thee not,
topsy-turvydom is come again. (3.3.92-94)
